Elementary/Secondary Referrals

The elementary and secondary programs at the Pingree enter are funded differently. The elementary program is funded by two endowment funds: the Bourne-Spafford Foundation and the Valley Foundation. Children in the secondary grades are not eligible for any endowment funds. Both elementary and secondary students may be eligible for additional scholarship money from the Carson Smith Special Needs Scholarship Fund through the Utah State Office of Education. Parents may place their child’s name on the mailing list to receive applications for service. All families are mailed an application in November. This application includes a cover sheet, a request for IEP’s if the child is not currently in service in the Pingree Center, as well as financial information including a tax return. Applications must be returned by the stated deadline with supporting materials if the family wishes to be considered for financial aid. A selection committee meets in December to select the children who will be attending the program the following school year. As the elementary and secondary programs are privately funded, all children have a tuition assessed for services. However, all children are considered for scholarships. Acceptance letters are mailed January through March. Tuition begins to be collected in March. This ensures that those accepting placements are committed to the program. Curriculum for the elementary and secondary programs follows the general curriculum. However, there are several components in the elementary and secondary curriculum that differ from preschool. Academic rotations in math, reading and language are incorporated for those children who require academic groups. Some individualized programs might focus on the academic skills in a functional manner such as using calculators for math in a grocery setting, color identification for sorting laundry, matching fractions to measuring cups for independent cooking, etc. As in the preschool programs, goals are written in collaboration with families.
